As an Android user, you might have discovered that apps crashed seemingly for no reason. The users and the apps themself were not to blame, and it was an error from Android, or rather one in the WebView component of Android. This is responsible for displaying web content in apps. Google reacted quite quickly and pushed out updates. As soon as these were installed, the problem should be solved. They announced what the error was (and how to fix it, if not already done).

If your device was affected, follow the steps below to fix this issue.

To fix this issue, Android system WebView and Google Chrome need to be updated. Google Play will soon download the update for these apps on affected devices, or you can update manually to fix the issue immediately.
To manually update follow these steps:

  1. Open the Play Store app.
  2. Search for “Android System WebView.”
  3. Select “Update.” If “Update” is not displayed, skip this step.
  4. Repeat these steps for Google Chrome.
  5. Consider creating your own WebView-based apps
